Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Bazi reading, I Ching divination, Five Elements, and how Chimystic works.
1What is Bazi (八字)?
Bazi translates to "Eight Characters" — the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches from your birth year, month, day, and hour. Together they form the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理), a system that has been used for over 2,000 years to reveal a person's life patterns, personality tendencies, and potential challenges. Each of the eight characters is associated with one of the Five Elements, creating a unique elemental blueprint that is as individual as your fingerprint.
2How accurate is a Bazi reading?
Bazi has been used throughout Chinese history by emperors, scholars, and generals. Many people find it remarkably accurate for understanding personality patterns and life tendencies. That said, Bazi is best treated as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth rather than absolute prediction. Your chart shows your nature — what you do with it is entirely your choice. The value of a Bazi reading lies in the self-awareness it provides.
3Is Chimystic really free?
Yes, completely free. Your initial Bazi reading, daily fortune, I Ching hexagram guidance, and Guan Di spirit lot draws are all free with no hidden charges. We believe ancient wisdom should be accessible to everyone. If we add premium features in the future (like the AI-enhanced Master Reading), the core readings will always remain free.
4What is the I Ching and how is it different from Bazi?
The I Ching (Book of Changes) is a 3,000-year-old Chinese classic that uses 64 hexagrams to offer guidance for life situations. While Bazi is a fixed destiny analysis based on your birth chart, the I Ching is consulted for specific questions or daily guidance. Bazi tells you who you are; the I Ching tells you how to navigate what comes. We combine both at Chimystic — your Bazi chart determines your foundational energy, while daily I Ching guidance helps you make wise choices.
5What information do I need for an accurate reading?
For the most accurate Bazi reading, you need four pieces of information: (1) your birth date, (2) your exact birth time (hour and minute), (3) your birth location, and (4) your gender. The birth time is especially important — even one hour difference can change your entire Hour Pillar. If you don't know your exact birth time, you can still get a partial reading, but the analysis will be less complete. Check your birth certificate or ask your parents — many people discover their birth time this way!
6What is a Day Master and why is it important?
Your Day Master (日主) is the Heavenly Stem from your Day Pillar — it is the center of your entire Bazi chart. Think of it as your core self, your fundamental nature. There are 10 Day Masters, each with a specific element and yin/yang quality. For example, Bing Fire (丙) is like the Sun — warm, radiant, and charismatic — while Gui Water (癸) is like rain — deep, intuitive, and mysterious. Knowing your Day Master is the first step to understanding your Bazi chart.
7How are the Lucky Elements (喜神) determined?
Your Lucky Elements (also called "Favorable Gods" or 喜神) are determined by analyzing your Bazi chart's elemental balance. The algorithm identifies which element strengthens your weak spots and supports your Day Master. For example, if your chart has strong Fire but weak Water, Water becomes your Lucky Element because it balances the Fire. Wearing your Lucky Element's color or engaging in activities associated with it can help harmonize your energy.
8What are Luck Pillars (大运)?
Luck Pillars are 10-year cycles that overlay your birth chart. They represent the changing cosmic energy you move through as you age. Your birth chart is like the stage; your Luck Pillars determine which parts of your life get highlighted every decade. A Fire Luck Pillar brings visibility and recognition, while a Water Luck Pillar brings flow and adaptability. Understanding your Luck Pillars helps you make better decisions about when to take action and when to be patient.
9How do I know which animal sign I am?
Your Chinese zodiac animal sign is determined by your birth YEAR according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Unlike the Western zodiac which changes monthly, the Chinese zodiac changes yearly. The 12 animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. However, in Bazi, your animal sign (Earthly Branch) appears in all four pillars — so you have four animals influencing different areas of your life, not just one!
10What is True Solar Time and why does it matter?
True Solar Time adjusts your birth time based on your actual geographic longitude. Traditional Bazi calculations use the local solar time at your birthplace, not the standardized time zone time. For example, if you were born at 2:00 PM in a location that's 30 minutes behind the time zone center, your True Solar Time would be around 1:30 PM. This adjustment can affect your Hour Pillar calculation, which is why we ask for your birth location.
11Can I save my reading and come back to it?
Yes! If you create a free account using Supabase Auth (magic link login — no password needed), your reading history is saved and accessible across devices. You can revisit your Bazi chart, compare daily fortunes, and track how your understanding grows over time. Your data is stored securely with industry-standard encryption.
12How is Chinese metaphysics different from Western spirituality?
Chinese metaphysics is pragmatic and systematic — it's based on observable patterns in nature (the Five Elements, yin and yang, the 60-year cycle) rather than faith or belief. While Western astrology focuses on the positions of celestial bodies, Chinese Bazi focuses on the energy patterns of time itself. Bazi is less about "what will happen to me" and more about "what kind of energy am I working with right now?" It's a practical toolkit for living in harmony with natural cycles.
